This is a miniature replica of the kilometer markers placed by the French government in 1946 following the route of Patton's tanks from Normandy to Bastogne during World War II. The itinary was named "Voie de la Liberte" or Road of Liberty. The torch over the ocean was inspired by the Statue of Liberty.Every year since 1986 a bicycle race (a mini Tour de France) is organized along the way to commemorate this event.
This replica is made by the faience maker, H.B. Henriot of Quimper. Painted by hand, only 1050 of these markers were made in 1984 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of D-DAY. Each one is unique and numbered. It mesures 10 inches high. The picture with a bicycle shows one of the original markers, still in existence on a country road in France.
